The Jefferson County Farm Bureau and Chamber of Commerce are holding their annual summer picnic Tuesday August 9th from 6 PM on at Never Say Never Racing Stables in Shenandoah Junction. There will be fun and food: Catering will be by Paul's of Oakland, and there will be an introduction of a new breed of horse in America, the Gypsy Vanner.

This breed is usually of pinto coloring and has many draft horse breed characteristics such as a broad build, endurance and abundant feathering on the lower legs.  These horses were bred to be a wagon horse.  A demonstration with these horses will be given during the tour.

 

Tickets are $16 for Adults and $7 for children.

Jefferson County Farm Day 2011 - June 18th

 

Enjoy a free self guided tour of local, active farms...it's Jefferson County Farm Day 2011. On Saturday June 18th (10 am to 5 pm) show your self around a few of our showcase farms (and markets) to learn where local food is coming from and where it's going. Roxley Farms, Taylor Mountain Farm, White Rock Farm and the new Morgan's Grove Market are on the schedule. Visit them all to enjoy a lively and lovely day in the country.

Regional Food Roundtable Less Than Two Weeks Away

The public regional food forum roundtable for the Eastern Panhandle is coming up in less than two weeks.   Hosted by the Morgan County Extension Office in Berkeley Springs on Monday May 2nd, this public discussion will be one of six state-wide in West Virginia to assist in drafting a grass-roots based state food policy document and is actively seeking input from producers, processors, distributors and consumers. Panhandle Food Systems Roundtable - May 2

The West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition is hosting a series of regional roundtables to discuss development of a WV food charter / state food policy. Each of the six regions will have it own meeting, promoted through a partnership between the West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition, West Virginia University Extension Services, the WV Department of Education, WV Community Development Hub, and local partners.

The purpose of the meetings is to discuss what is needed to strengthen our state's local food economy and to get more healthy, locally-farmed food to the plates and forks of West Virginians. Individuals, businesses, organizations & agencies involved with farming, gardening, food processing, food storage and distribution, grocery stores and restaurants, 4H and FFA , institutional food service, nutrition and food assistance programs, and food distribution through food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens.
