Hallelujah!

 

Finally -- one of the storms passing by gave us a little something!  For weeks we've been watching the rare rain pass by to the north or the south of us...I'd nearly lost hope...but this time we are getting a little bit. As soon as it lets up I'm going to go out and check the gauge!  Update:  we got slightly over an inch...first significant rain since July 10th -- over a month ago!

Spring, Sprang, Sprung

Well I guess it is not such a slow spring after all (I have been miserable here in this stone house, too cheap the pay the oil company). I noticed about two days ago that the forsythia bushes along Shepherd Grade are just starting to bloom, and  remembered that I had taken pictures of them last spring as well. Here are the two sets of pictures side by side, taken March 31, 2008 and March 20, 2009.

 

From the looks of it, they pruned them in the fall (Whoops!) instead of immediately after blooming, and so they lost a lot of that high flying color that makes forsythias so attractive.

Paranoia

The forecast is for low teens tonight and tomorrow night (though it is now after 10 PM and the wind is still blowing, which would normally mean the temp is not going to drop too much below the 21F the indoor-outdoor is showing right now). Still, after I took my packages to the Post Office, I stopped by the Princess St garden to put the row covers back over the garlic and shallots; I'd hate to lose them.
