Well, I let the garlic sit, necks broken, for a couple of days, but late yesterday the updated forecast predicted a strong chance of thundershowers every day this week, so I figured I better pull the plants and give them as much sun drying time as I could. I assumed that if any showers came I'd have plenty of time to get them under cover.
I worked late last night out on the just-screened porch next to the garden -- that's the laptop glowing blue there, not a TV; the garlic is at the lower left of the picture -- and went to bed. Around 3:30 AM, I was woken by thunder and bolted out of bed, threw on some shorts and trotted out to the garden. Lo! The newly installed motion detecting scare-deer light worked, and it was only five minutes and I had them all into the harvest basket, then collapsed on the front porch and watched the storm go blithely by to our south.
Oh, well. Later today, I'll string them up and hang to dry somewhere: porch, garage...not really sure since this is my first season here...but I do have an excellent drying area in the garage!
And the bulbs look pretty damn good for a first year crop -- I have size thirteen hands, so you can see that these sized up pretty well!
Especially considering the terrible shape that bed was in late last November when I planted them, I'm satisfied. It is was the first bed to be prepared, and I was in a hurry to beat the onset of Winter, so I didn't really have time to do it right like I do now.
